Wondering how to put Christmas lights on a metal roof? You’ve come to the right place. Not only because decorating your home for Christmas is one way to get in the holiday spirit and make your space more festive. But also because Mountaintop Metal Roofing contractors is the region’s premier metal roofing company.

The twinkling lights of Christmas are a holiday season tradition for many homeowners. In the Pacific Northwest, the largest holiday light shows, Christmas festivals of lights, various “winter wonderlands,” light displays at the Oregon Zoo, and other area attractions all add up to a wide variety of festivities!

But if you have recently purchased a home with a type of roof that is metal (metal roofing panels, galvanized steel roofing, standing seam metal roofing system, aluminum or other metal roofing system or roofing material) or if you had a new metal roof installed this year, you will need to take care to install the lights the right way.

What to do before putting up Christmas lights on your metal roof

  • Inspections
  • Safety
  • Tools

First, before you begin decorating your space, inspect the light strings and bulbs, and exposed fasteners, if any. It is best to have everything strung up while you are on the ground, rather than on the ladder.

It is important to take ladder safety very seriously while you are hanging lights, so be sure to have someone with you while you are hanging the decorations, as well.

Next, make sure you gather the right tools.

There are a few options for getting your lights up, including plastic or magnetic clips and command strips. If you use magnetic clips, use C7 and C9 clips. This is one of the easiest ways to install lights. Simply put the magnetic side to your roof and string your lights how you want them.

There are also a variety of magnetic hooks available to use that work in a similar way. Be sure you purchase heavy-duty hooks that will withstand the elements throughout the holidays.

Command strips are able to withstand a variety of temperatures and are water-resistant, making them a great choice for stringing lights, too.

For magnetic clips, you will simply need to snap a clip on each socket of the Christmas tree light cord.

If you use command strips, be sure that the surface is clean. Then, place the stick strip onto the area you want it and hold it for 10 seconds.

Once the holidays are over, removing the lights is super easy! Simply remove the magnets and the lights and store the lights in a watertight container. That way you can prevent damage to the lights between this year and next.
