Roof Underlayment for Your Metal Roof

A Defensive Strategy for your Roof

Few major home installations provide more protection and a better return on investment than a metal roof. However, even the best metal roof needs some assistance. Roof underlayment is an effective and necessary choice; it adds to the defenses already provided by your metal roof.

Underlayment is a water- and vapor-resistant barrier. It is installed directly on your roof deck and can be made from a number of different materials (typically felt paper, synthetic felt, or another type of material, such as rubberized asphalt).

Think of underlayment as an extra measure of protection for your roof and your home.

At Mountaintop Metal Roofing, we encourage our customers — both residential and commercial — to explore the range of underlayment options available to them. With decades of experience on staff, we can help you find just the right roofing materials for you and your home or business.

Underlayment and Your Metal Roof

Of all the various metal roof products, underlayment may represent the greatest investment — other than the aluminum roofing material itself, of course. And with such an investment, one should consider a few questions before choosing a material.

Those questions would include a discussion of the various pros and cons of synthetic underlayment versus felt paper underlayment. It would also include at least a brief examination of your specific underlayment’s waterproofing and soundproofing features.

Metal roofs are more popular than ever. So it makes sense that more people are considering how else to provide the best protection for their homes. After all, a home is typically the biggest investment that people will make in their lives. An investment like that requires looking after, and one of the best ways to look after your home is by installing a metal roof and a quality underlayment.

One reason for the increasing popularity of metal roofs is that modern metal roofs are designed to look like something other than metal — cedar shingles, for instance. Gone are the days when a homeowner’s or business owner’s only option was corrugated or standing seam metal roofs.

So Much Protection, So Many Options

Metal roofing with effective underlayment provides so many advantages compared to other roofing types. Among them:

  • Metal roofing is lighter than other materials
  • It’s energy-efficient, reflecting heat away from your home
  • It lasts longer because there is no chance for rotting or rusting (ask us about our non-prorated and transferable lifetime guarantee); even moss won’t gain a foothold
  • Easy maintenance (usually all that’s required is to hose off the debris)
  • Aluminum is versatile (we can customize it to match your home: different colors and seam profiles, plus the look of cedar shake, slate, and more)

Underlayment Protection

Just beneath the surface of your metal roof your next layer of protection: the underlayment. Designed to lay and stay under your metal roof, you won’t need to think about it again. It will provide both thermal and waterproofing protections in addition to those provided by the aluminum.

Some people are concerned about the noise factor, especially in climates where lots of rain falls. No worries; the underlayment soundproofs the roof for you.

Securing a quality underlayment for your roof is a top priority. It protects your home from the elements and from the tremendous variety of weather that can cause damage to roofs that are less well-protected. A metal roof with underlayment can last upwards of 50 to 70 years with little to no maintenance.

Consider the following types of underlayment.

Felt Underlayment (for example, tar or asphalt felt)

This is probably the most common type of underlayment, especially on roofs that feature steep slopes. It costs less than other materials and provides good protection from water, but it doesn’t last as long as other types.

Synthetic Underlayment

Composed of woven polymers, this type of underlayment has been gaining in popularity. It lasts longer than paper-based underlayment and is a fantastic addition to a metal roof. It resists tears and other types of damage.

Synthetic underlayment does cost more than felt, however. And one of its advantages — its impermeability — can also be a disadvantage when it comes to ventilation.

Self-Adhering Membrane Underlayment

Finally, we come to self-adhering membrane underlayment, also known as the peel-and-stick method. Made of rolled fiberglass, it holds up well in storms and other damaging weather. It’s very effective, especially in places where ice dams are known to form (eaves, dormers, etc.).

Keep in mind that many synthetic-type underlayments have Class-A fire ratings, offering a high level of resistance to combustion.
