Does a metal roof on a beach house make sense?
As a vacation spot, second home, or forever home, a beach house on the coast is about as relaxing as it gets. During the sunny days, light floods the home and the water stretches out for miles. And on the stormy days, you get a front-row seat to almost everything Mother Nature has to throw at us.
But the same sunshine, salt air, high winds, and pummelling rain also take its toll on the roof of your beach home. Cedar shake shingles certainly complete the look of a coastal home, but without the proper upkeep, they may not last more than 10 or 20 years. Other common types of roofing material, such as composite, architectural, or asphalt shingles don’t fare much better.
Salt and Metal Roofing
At first glance, it would appear metal roofing material would not mesh very well with the salty sea air. A steel roof that hasn’t been properly treated will certainly rust in wet conditions, but at the coast, its lifespan is shortened considerably. The mixture of oxygen, moisture, and salt will corrode a steel roof and most other metals.
When comparing freshwater to saltwater, untreated metal materials will corrode five times faster when submerged in saltwater as opposed to freshwater. In the humid, salty air of the coast, metal will corrode 10 times as fast as air with normal humidity and no salt.
No wonder cedar shakes are such a popular choice on the coast. Of course, cedar has its own issues to deal with, including algae, mildew, and other organisms that thrive in the humid air. If not painstakingly maintained, cedar won’t last very long.
Aluminum roofing, however, has none of those issues. More “sea-worthy” than steel and more durable than cedar, aluminum is rust-resistant, repels moss, won’t fade for decades, and is built to last a century with little or no maintenance. If you’re living on the coast, do you want to enjoy yourself or spend time dealing with your roof?
Advantages of Aluminum
The humid, salty sea air has little effect on the longevity of aluminum and powder coating will keep the roof from looking chalky over time. Mountaintop Metal Roofing installs a complete line of corrosion-resistant roofing systems, including aluminum shingles, standing seam metal roofs, and even cedar shake profile roofing.
